Brad Pitt picks up a sword and brings a muscular, brooding presence to the role of Greek warrior Achilles in this spectacular retelling of The Iliad. Orlando Bloom and Diane Kruger play the legendary lovers who plunge the world into war, Eric Bana portrays the prince who dares to confront Achilles, and Peter O'Toole rules Troy as King Priam. Director Wolfgang Petersen recreates a long-ago world of bireme warships, clashing armies, the massive fortress city and the towering Trojan Horse.

Most people blamed this movie for the shallowness of the characters, but they are not shallow, they are God driven... It's true that as the gods are omitted in the film Helen appears as a brainless woman determined to trigger a war for love: she is not Aphrodite promised Paris he would have her. Some say that Paris is a spoiled brat who should have been killed: he has grown far from his family and was only found back recently, that's why they are all so glad to have him (moreover Paris is not supposed to be a nice man just because Orlando bloom is famous...). The absence of Gods had numerous effects, it is not obvious for people who do not know the iliad that Achille has reasons to be so scornful, that Paris and Helen had no choice. People think that Agamemnon is a tyrant ready to invade any part of the world for any reason: he is only Menelas' brother and leader of the kings who have all sworn to protect the couple Menelas/ Helen There are some details that really do not fit in the original story (the way Odysseus convinces Achille to come, the death of Achille...) but it's an adaptation of a book six time as long as LOTR, and including a cast of famous actors that do not like to die stupidly and cowardly... In my opinion it is a very good film, though there are some discrepancies with the Illiad. Those who say that they didn't like the characters miss the point cos the characters are mainly as they should be. Moreover I think that those who do not know, quite well, the Illiad can not appreciate the movie as they should, cos they do not know the ins and outs. And they have not dreamed of troy all their childhood. In an historical point of view, I think that the crew did good research works for the setting, costumes and weapons; especially for the Trojan cos there are not so much relics existing.

This is a great movie! This is one of my all time, favorite movie versions of Troy! I have always wondered about the old saying that the Helen of Troy could launch a 1000 ships, because of her beauty! I always wondered why and how that could be done, and this movie gives you a real good idea of how it might have been, and you get the why and how to the "Achilles Heel" saying. And I have always wondered and hoped that the grand city of Troy really existed! I just love movies about places and people of long ago, you get to step back into time with them, and see how they lived and loved!
This is a remarkable story about a grand high walled city being overtaken by a very big and mighty army! You will see a prince of Troy(Orlando Bloom), fall in love with a beautiful woman named Helen, and you will see the heir of Troy, Hector (Eric Bana), who is a very brave and mighty warrior stand up and fight against Achilles (Brad Pitt), who is one of the greatest warriors that ever lived, according to legend! Achilles and Hector are greatly admired by everyone because of their brave courage, and honor, and their skill on a battlefield, and because they have the ability and wisdom to lead men!
This story has alot of action, and drama, it has it all; greedy lust for power, revenge, desire, love, war, heartbreak, courage, bravery, death, jealousy! I loved the beautiful costumes, and clothes, and all the grandeaur of the city of Troy, and the stunning visual scenes of the war and the mighty armies!
Ladies there is alot of handsome men in this movie, and Guys there is alot of action in this movie, and you will see some pretty ladies as well!
My favorite scene in this movie is when the King of Troy(Peter O'Toole) makes a surprise vist to Achilles, and I just loved this scene, it touched my heart. Peter O'Toole and Brad Pitt and Eric Bana did a outstanding job in this movie, they were just awesome! And I think that the people behind the scenes in making this movie did a outstanding job also, you can tell that a lot of hard work went into making this movie, because it is so real and alot of attention was paid to all these wonderful details, that made it so real and successful!
I love ALL the handsome men in this movie and there was hundreds of them, and of course I loved Orlando Bloom, and I just loved Brad Pitt with his handsome self, as Achilles! WOW! I also loved the handsome king, that was Achilles friend; they all kept my eyes glued to the TV scene, but the one that touched my heart, and took my breath away with his handsome brave self was Hector,(Eric Bana)! This was the first time that I ever saw Eric Bana in any movie, and I thought he was just beautiful, and he became my favorite hero, he just melted my heart, with his courage and wisdom ,and his awesome beauty! I highly recommend this movie, I just loved it!

I like this movie (even though I've never been a Brad Pitt fan), and enjoy the added length. I'm not sure why the soundtrack was 'enhanced' for this release (the 'Director's Cut' I happen to have the HD-DVD version) Troy [HD DVD].
In particular, I love the fight scene between Achilles and Hector. I think it's one of the best I've seen in ANY movie, of it's genre (including "Gladiator") and I liked the sparse musical background, which basically consisted of what sounded like bongos, or some kind of drum instrument.
Now on this Director's Cut it's full orchestration, building to a huge musical climax.
I find it distracting, and still go back to the original version (DVD) to watch that fight scene. Otherwise, I give the movie in general 5 stars.
Incidentally, if you like Helen, you get to see a little bit MORE of her in this Director's Cut, if you know what I mean...*wink, wink, nudge, nudge* say no more. Troy - Director's Cut (Two-Disc Special Edition)
