"SOLID SEQUEL FUN FOR KIDS AND ADULTS!" 2009-10-02
By ! MR. KNOW IT ALL ;-b (TRI STATE AREA)
I am a sucker for a good animated film and the original Madagascar was a very good example of the genre. This sequel retains the charm of the original even if we feel we've been there before. The animation is stellar and the voice work inspired in this colorful film. I love the pop culture references and sometimes wonder if these films are made for adults or children. Fortunately this film works for both!

 "excellent animated comedy" 2009-09-23

I found Madagascar 2 much funnier than the first one, probably due to the fact the first one focused more on zany dancing scenes. This one however, has almost no dancing whatsoever (or at least, no lengthy dancing scenes that are somewhat of a distraction because they feel a bit pointless other than to show off the brilliant animated work). I still love the first Madagascar though.

The lion, zebra, hippo and giraffe have all returned and are honestly really darn funny this time around. They also act serious when the moment arrives, and it's believable enough that you the viewer actually FEEL for them, so the emotional scenes really work. It's rare when an animated comedy manages to pull THAT off.

The entire airplane crashing scene was hysterical, and the penguins, while probably not as funny this time around, offered a ton of laughs.

The funniest part of the entire movie however, was the old lady battling the lion by completely kicking his rear-end up and down the fields, haha. The bizarre and twisted animation showing the old lady do all kinds of wild flips in the air and crazy spin moves while fighting the lion put the icing on the cake for me and made me convinced that THIS is a hilarious animated film and a winner for kids and adults alike.

The story once again focused on the lions, and specifically the younger one that plays the main role.

I just think Madagascar is one of the funniest animated comedy movies you can possibly ask for. The beautiful and colorful animation is second only to the Simpsons. Seriously, I'd put the animation on the same level as the almighty Simpsons. It's THAT good, and whichever group of people was in charge of writing such a wonderful, creative, and inventive storyline deserves some kind of award. Splendid work all around.

 "Hugely entertaining!!!" 2009-09-20

This a replacement because my first one wore out from being played so much by my two five year old grandsons.

Grandma even liked it. Kept the kids attention throughout the whole movie. Need to watch the first Madagascar to relate this one to New York. Good clean entertainment for anyone.

"Not as great as the first but still entertaining" 2009-09-17
By Jenny J.J.I. (That Lives in Northern Nevada)
To me, there's a lot of similarities between the "Ice Age" movies and the "Madagascar" movies. First, both series are about animals going on a journey. Second, they have similar animation styles. And third, they both suffered the same problems in their sequels... although "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa" made it through these problems better than "Ice Age: The Meltdown."

The strength of the first "Madagascar" was its silliness. It never took itself too seriously. The characters were very goofy, and it was the secondary players (i.e., the penguins and the lemurs) that really stole the show. That silliness is kept up in the film's sequel, and that's what makes it work. While Alex the Lion (Ben Stiller), Marty the Zebra (Chris Rock), Gloria the Hippo (Jada Pinkett Smith) and Melman the Giraffe (David Schwimmer) are all given storylines, it is the wayward penguins who are the heart and soul of the picture. Why else did they score so much screen time in the trailers?

King Julian (Sacha Baron Cohen) is also back as the ruler of the lemurs. Those were the characters I loved the most in the first film, and it's a great relief to see that the filmmakers have listened to the fans and brought them back in significant roles for the sequel. This film takes off where the first one ended. The animals from the Central Park Zoo are stranded on the island of Madagascar, and the lemur empire is attempting to send them back in a plane flown by penguins. However, since penguins can't fly, the plane crash lands in Africa where Alex is reunited with his father Zuba (Bernie Mac).

This sequel isn't as snappy as the first film, which had a distinct freshness about it. It also stumbles in the middle, trying to find a significant plot line. However, unlike "Ice Age 2," "Madagascar: Back 2 Africa" manages to refocus the characters and have them rally around each other near the end of the film. The middle-of-the-movie speed bumps are quickly forgotten when the film comes to a climax.

But all this characterization and plot development is unnecessary for the target audience. "Madagascar: Back 2 Africa" is a movie for kids. And with the exception of a little bit of bathroom humor, and some vague hippo sex references, this film is squeaky clean.

 "A Good Follow Up" 2009-09-13
By Steven Cash
I bought this for my father seeing as he liked the first. This movie is a fantastic and often farcicle romp through the wild fields of Africa. Alex, our over the top hero lion who is always in over his head leads his merry band of animal misfit friends to their hoped final destination from the first film. Along the way Gloria the hippo finds the love of her life, Marty the zebra looses his identity, and Melmen the Giraffe becomes a doctor all while their intepid leader rediscovers his long lost family. The animation is superb with a style all its own and the voice work is entertaining(I especially enjoy Sacha Baron Cohen as humble king Juilen). Overall a good movie worth seeing if you have a penchant for slapstick comedy and a must if you enjoyed the first.
