The extraordinary debut novel that became a modern classic

Born mute, speaking only in sign, Edgar Sawtelle leads an idyllic life with his parents on their farm in remote northern Wisconsin. For generations, the Sawtelles have raised and trained a fictional breed of dog whose remarkable gift for companionship is epitomized by Almondine, Edgar's lifelong friend and ally. Edgar seems poised to carry on his family's traditions, but when catastrophe strikes, he finds his once-peaceful home engulfed in turmoil.

Forced to flee into the vast wilderness lying beyond the Sawtelle farm, Edgar comes of age in the wild, fighting for his survival and that of the three yearling dogs who accompany him, until the day he is forced to choose between leaving forever or returning home to confront the mysteries he has left unsolved.

Filled with breathtaking scenes—the elemental north woods, the sweep of seasons, an iconic American barn, a fateful vision rendered in the falling rain—The Story of Edgar Sawtelle is a meditation on the limits of language and what lies beyond, a brilliantly inventive retelling of an ancient story, and an epic tale of devotion, betrayal, and courage in the American heartland.

"Wanted to throw the book at the end!" 2010-01-05
By Julie (Dunwoody, GA United States)
Just finished this book and I had to restrain myself from throwing it across the room when I finished. One of the worst endings I have ever read and especially frustrating after getting through all 560 some pages. I kept thinking it was going to all make sense and come together with a beautiful ending...WRONG! Won't recommend this book to a single person!

"This book is one of those stories that will remain forever a part of me" 2010-01-04
By R. Jeffrey (Planet Earth)
This book is a heartwarming and heartwrenching story about a family's love for one another and the dogs they raise. If you're a dog lover you will love this book. It eloquently captures the relationship between human and dog as well as the relationship(s) between family members. I was so sad when this book ended. It is one that I will urge all my friends to read and those who urged me to read it were right, it's a unique, literary wonder. Enjoy!!!

"pretty words, fair story, crappy ending" 2010-01-04
By HN (Missouri)
Reminded me of a book I would have to read for HS English. Not the least bit worth your time. Could have earned one more star from me had the ending been different. Left me feeling cheated that I had invested my time reading it.

"Best dog-, character-, suspense-book I've read all year" 2010-01-01
By Ann L. Weber (Asheville, NC United States)
As I write, many weeks after reading "Edgar Sawtelle," I am still touched and haunted by this intensely involving, absorbing, touching, funny, beautifully written book. Easily the best fiction among so many works I've read this year, once my husband and I had read it, "The Story of Edgar Sawtelle" became a work we urged and pressed upon all our fellow book-scarfing friends. So far, every reader has checked in mid-book to say, "I'm at the part where ...!", and after completing the book, "Thanks so much, I loved it, and I'm so sorry it's over." How can this book have received only a 3-star average among almost 1500 Amazon reviewers? Advice to not-yet readers: If you like or even have a simple curiosity about dogs, if you like character development and subtlety, rich vocabulary, and simple but engaging plots, I believe you'll appreciate and be so glad you are reading and have read this book. Further advice: Avoid "spoilers" in other reviews eager to compare this to classic stories. If you get a recent printing, skip over the pre-title-page reviews and quotes, which can be a bit prejudicing or even simplistic. If possible, resist even reading the "tags" Amazon provides atop the book's listing page online. Read it afresh for yourself. Enjoy and evaluate it for yourself. But most of all, since your time is precious, give yourself opportunities to read at least a few pages at a time every time, and allow yourself to peruse the author's beautiful phrasing and depictions, to enjoy it as a "good read," and to experience some surprising answers when you wonder "what can possibly happen next?" I came to care intensely about Edgar and his companions, and I longed to at least see for myself the "Sawtelle dogs." Enter the world of this book and I believe you will feel this way as well. I envy those who have yet to read this book.

 "Big hearted, beautiful prose" 2009-12-31
By Jeff Bergstrom (Rockford, IL)
I loved this book. Anyone that has an affinity for the Midwest and for dogs will love it as well. The descriptions of Edgar's relationship with his dogs is beautiful. A wonderful read.
